Shure drum microphones used in 5.1 recording project

Popular and World Music student Richard Cooper has just completed a recording project which will eventually provide samples for software built in Reaktor 5.5 and Max MSP.

Richards decision to do this project came about when he reached the final stages in the 3rd year of his course, when he was given complete freedom over what to do for his music technology module. He chose to design a surround sound drum sampler software, with a light version in NI Reaktor and a full version in Max MSP, including a humanize function, extensive panning information and multiple velocities, whilst utilising hundreds of drum samples recorded with Shure microphones.

Richard chose Shure mics because:

“With Shure microphones, you can always be confident that recordings will be reliable and the perfect sound will be captured. Shure equipment is easy to use and the variety of microphones available provides enough equipment for any application. In the case of this project, Shure was the best choice to capture every part of the drum kit during the multisampling process.”

“I used the SM57s and a PG52 along side the beta models to produce clear and accurate tracking. However, I particularly liked the KSM137s thanks to their precise representation of sound. These microphones are great as drum overheads due to the virtually flat frequency response they have over 200hz. My project is to create a drum sampler software in 5.1 surround sound, so I used the KSM137s to record in mono with the microphone placed directly over the relevant cymbal.”

Among the mics used were Beta 57’s on the snares, SM57’s and PG56’s on the toms, KSM137’s for overheads; and the trusty Beta 52 for the kick with a further PG52 to pick up the body of the kick sound.

Recordings took place at Leeds university with 5.1 surround sound genelec monitoring, a digidesign control 24 desk and ProTools HD.

We wish Richard the best of luck in completing the project.
